Renemia is hosting a posthumous retrospective exhibition of Tom Max's work that traces his creative journey between the years of 1980 and 1989.
Born in Okinawa in 1941, Tom Max, whose real name is Tsutomu Makishi, was a influential pioneer of avant-garde art in post-war Okinawa. His artwork incorporates the imagery of American pop culture, expressing a critical ambivalence to the presence of American military bases and the inculcation of Japanese values in Okinawa.
Tom Max's work will be on display from October 26, 2019 to November 3, 2019.
